About Juan Juan
Alt country with Latin American influences. Mixing the musical feel of Wilco with the creative deviation of Devendra Banhart. Releasing his Debut Album ‘New Mexico’ in November 2020.
On this album he musically constructing a space, a New Land, where three worlds (his own, the USA and Mexico) meet. Metamorphing into this new thing; calling it ‘New Mexico’.
Co-produced by the acclaimed alternative Dutch producer Casper van der lans (Pip blom / The Homesick / Personal trainer). Mastered by Grammy Nominee Attie Bauw (Judas Priest / The
Scorpions / Gorki).
Visiting his friend Sergio Mendoza (Calexico, Orkesta Mendoza) in Tuscon Arizona, Juan Juan engulfed himself in both North-American and Mexican music. Back home he created a sound, and subsequently songs, that echoed that feel, shaping a vocabulary for putting his feelings into sounds.
He then invited his friends Casper van der Lans on Bass, Joost Abbel on guitar and Pedal Steel and taught his girlfriend how to play the drums (needing a simple but tasteful groovin' rhythm section), and recorded 11 song that form the album ‘New Mexico. A host of guest musicians like Matteo Myderwyk (Organ), Carlos Zorita Diaz (Cuban tres) and Arno Bakker (Sousaphone) added their magic to the whole.
The individual tracks skip between genres, but at the same time make a coherent, sensitive whole, presenting a sound that’s both unique and familiar. Everything was recorded on cassette and on an eight-track reel to reel, to re-imagine old musicality.
